The Emperor Tetra has an attractive coloration and an elegant finnage. It was introduced into the aquarium hobby decades ago and have become one of the more frequently seen tetras in the hobby. A key difference of the Emperor Tetra with the rest of the tetras are its unisex appearance. It is easy to tell the difference between their sex as male and females are noticeably different.
For Males, the dorsal and caudal fins of the male significantly longer and more pointed than the female. The male has an extended ray in the middle of the caudal fins so much that it resembles a three pointed fork. Females are also smaller and plump in the body as compared to the male.
The emperor tetras do best in aquariums with slow flow and in an estimated school composing of equal number of males and females. They appreciate quiet habitats and should have peaceful tankmates. They accept flake foods, freeze dried food, frozen and live foods readily.
