Peppermint shrimp are excellent additions to community reef tanks. This type of shrimp, also known as a sweeper shrimp, offers several benefits compared to other types of cleaner shrimps. Unlike many ornamental shrimps, peppermint shrimp are not aggressive or territorial. They can be kept in groups or individually, making them a versatile choice for reef tanks. Let's explore some of the reasons why peppermint shrimp are a top choice for these types of tanks. One notable quality of the peppermint shrimp is its natural ability to control invasive aiptasia, also known as glass anemones. Keep in mind, however, that only L. boggessi will actually prey on aiptasia. While classified as a "cleaner" shrimp, Lysmata wurdemanni is actually more of a scavenger. It feeds on leftover food and decomposing organic material found in the reef tank and live rock.
Peppermint shrimp are considered amiable and enjoyable by many inhabitants of reef tanks. As with other invertebrates, they are sensitive to nitrate levels that are too high. Adequate iodine levels are crucial for promoting proper molting. Additional feeding is typically not needed, as these shrimp can often scavenge for their dietary requirements. In fact, peppermint shrimp who are well-fed have even been observed halting their consumption of aiptasia.
