The platy is an ideal community fish for new fish keepers as it is a hardy and is compatible with most species and very easy to breed. They are prolific breeders, giving birth to at least 20-50 youngsters each time. Bushy plants provide cover for the young fry. What is seemingly surprising is that males are not necessary for breeding! This is because once fertilized females can store sperm. Females in the store may already have mated, and stored sperm that may be used to fertilize several more batches of eggs, months after being kept with a male. Platies are sexed by their anal/ventral fin: The female has a typical anal fin, whereas males have a modified fin, called a gynopodium (a pointed, tubular appendage which is used to fertilize the female). The platy originates from Mexico and Belize, where waters are alkaline. However, the available platies are commercially bred and tolerate a large range of water conditions and should be kept in a group.
