Koi are highly valued for their robustness and variety of vibrant colors and alluring patterns. Considered the "rulers" of pond-dwelling fish, these bred members of the Cyprinidae family come in a range of hues and designs, typically white, yellow, orange, or a blend of these hues. While it's believed that these fish can live for over 200 years in the wild, they generally live for 25 to 35 years in captivity. To create an ideal habitat for Koi, provide them with a pond that holds at least 1,000 gallons of water, a bed of fine gravel, sturdy rocks, and hardy plants. Since Domestic Koi love plant roots and may uproot them while digging, it's vital to protect them by placing large rocks at their base.
Proper water conditions and filtration are crucial for maintaining your Koi's health. Male Koi can be easily identified by their concave anal section and sometimes by breeding spots on the head. Up to 1,000 eggs can be produced during spawning, with fry typically hatching within 4 to 7 days depending on water temperature. For the first 3 to 4 weeks, feed the fry small live or frozen daphnia, gradually transitioning to crushed flake and pellet foods. Their vibrant colors will develop within 3 to 12 weeks. To keep your Koi happy and healthy, provide them with a high-quality pellet or flake food. Despite being aggressive eaters, Domestic Koi make wonderful pets and can even be trained to eat from your hand!
