The Otocinclus, scientifically known as Otocinclus affinis and Otocinclus vittatus, is a native of southeastern Brazil. It also goes by various common names, such as Golden Otocinclus, Dwarf Suckermouth, Pygmy Suckermouth, and Midget Suckermouth Catfish. Its body shape and coloring resemble that of a Flying Fox and a Chinese Algae Eater, with a dark, mottled band starting from its head and extending to its tail fin. The fish boasts a silver-white coloring below the band and a mottled brown pattern above it. As a species that thrives in pristine environments, the Otocinclus requires extremely clean water conditions.
As an algae expert, the Otocinclus (Otocinclus sp.) is an excellent choice for keeping your tank free of soft algae. Just be sure to establish a food supply for it beforehand. This tiny fish is gentle on plants and can clean both live and artificial plants, as well as glass surfaces. Although they may not be the most active fish, they can provide entertainment by sticking to various surfaces and occasionally swimming around to find a new spot. And don't worry about the Otocinclus causing any harm to other fish species, as they are mainly at risk of being eaten by larger, aggressive fish like cichlids.
