Fishes should be fed based on their percentage of body weight. For maintenance, 0.5-1% body weight per day is adequate. Fish should at least be fed 5-6 days per week. The most common mistake made by fish owners is over-feeding their fishes. This often results in the degradation of water quality.
- Give quantity to allow feeding less than 5-10mins
- Adults usually feed 1x per day
- Siphon or scoop out any feed left over
- Rearing of young stock does require small meals fed frequently
- Feed young and growing fishes 2-3x per day
- Food = compounded powder, pellets or flakes, or fresh food such as shrimp, brine shrimp, other fish, insects or vegetables
Note* fresh food (meat) contaminates water easily.
Automatic feeders are available to ensure feeding time for fishes are constant. Water temperature and oxygen impact feeding behaviour of fishes. You should now what type of feed is meant for your fish. Sinking pelleted feed for bottom feeders, floating pelleted feed for surface feeders, slow sinking flaked food for small fishes.
There are different types of fishes: Omnivore, Herbivore, Carnivore
What is the difference?
- Different types of fish require different diet
- Like other organisms, a fish is structured with a mouth, teeth, and a digestive tract that is intended for certain types of food
